If you are searching for help:
Do you need to find housing, heating or fuel assistance, childcare or some other community-based
service in New York? Community Assets NY has a multitude of program and service
information available in our growing database. Chances are good that there is a
community based organization in your area that can help. CANY connects you
to local resources.
1. To get started, click the “Find Info & Services” icon on the left of the screen.
This link will take you to a new screen.
2. Choose the county or counties where you are located or where you want to search for
community resources, services and programs. You may also type in your town and
city or zip code to refine the search to your area. Leaving these fields blank
ensures a broader search over the entire county you are searching.
3. Choose one of the following ways to search for the information you are seeking:
organization (eg. Community Action Southwest), subject (eg. Housing), target group
(eg. senior citizens) or keyword (eg. Food pantry).
4. After clicking on your chosen search criteria, a set of results will be displayed.
Examine the results to determine which one most closely matches your needs. If you
search via Subject or target group, you may expand the topics by clicking on the blue arrows;
then choose a sub-category by clicking on one of the displayed sub-category sections.
If you search via keyword, type in a keyword and press the “search” button.
5. Click the desired organization program name for more information. Use the
organization’s displayed contact information to get in touch with the organization and begin
the program application process.
If you want to become a volunteer in your community:
1. Click the “Volunteer Center” icon on the left of the screen.
2. You may now search volunteer opportunities by any of the following search
terms: organization, event, or skills, interest area and geography. Choose a
category by clicking on it (if searching by organization, use the pull down menus by the
“Search by Organization” category to choose an organization name and volunteer opportunity
date. If you clicked on advanced search by skills, interest area or geography,
refine your search by checking as many of the small checkboxes that apply to your search. For
example, you could search in a county for volunteer opportunities that require the keywords
“reliability” and “fundraising” and that are related to “literacy”. Mouse over
any search criteria and click the highlighted topic for a description of that topic.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to register your volunteer information.
4. Once you are registered as a volunteer, CANY organizations may search
your entered information and contact you as needed for each respective volunteer opportunity
you apply for.
If you want to search for events on the Community Calendar:
1. Click the “Community Calendar” icon on the left of the screen.
2. Click the left or right arrows to visit different months’ events.
3. From the drop down menu above the calendar, you may choose to search
by one particular county or all counties and/or by one particular organization or
all organizations. The calendar will then display event dates in a highlighted
box. Click the box to learn more about events scheduled on that date.
4. Click the organization or event name to view contact and location data.
To search for a community organization’s contact information by using the Yellow Pages:
1. Click the “Yellow Pages” icon on the left of the screen.
2. Click the small checkboxes for all characteristics you want to include in
your search criteria. In the first orange selection box, you may choose from
topic categories. In the second orange box, you may choose which counties to
search within. In the third orange box, you may enter address information to
search. Click the search button.
3. Review the results. Click the organization’s name for more
information. If your search is not satisfactory, click the “search again”
button to return to the Yellow Pages menu and refine your search.
